Concert to feature selections from Vivaldi, Brahms and Tchaikovsky
The North Shore Symphony Orchestra (NSSO) will open its 52nd Season with a concert on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. at Stratford Road Elementary School located at 33 Bedford Road in Plainview.
The concert, entitled “Russian Focus” and “Sounds of the Season,” will feature Jeong-Yoon Park, the principal cellist and Anton Polezhayev, violin concertmaster of NSSO and artist-in-residence. Park will perform Shostakovich’s “Cello Concerto No. 1.” She has appeared as soloist with NSSO during the past four seasons in performances of Elgar’s “Cello Concerto” and Brahms’ “Double Concerto for Violin and Cello.” Park has been praised for her “vibrant sound and strong technique” and for her “passionate and musical performances.”
Polezhayev, who will perform Vivaldi’s “Winter Concerto,” has performed with NSSO many times as soloist of major violin concertos by Tchaikovsky, Lalo, Bruch, Brahms and Sibelius. Conducted by NSSO’s music director and conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will feature in addition to the concertos by Shostakovich and Vivaldi, Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles,” Stravinsky’s “Petrushka” and short popular selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”
Tickets are general admission $12, senior/student $10 and may be purchased at the door beginning at 7:15 p.m. on the evening of the concert. Further information about NSSO and the Dec. 8 concert may be found on the orchestra’s website at www.northshoresymphonyorch.org or call 695-4476.
The NSSO is currently celebrating its 52nd Season. Founded in 1961 by Dr. Charles Gouse, the NSSO has provided a way for hundreds of individuals from all professions and ages to share their enthusiasm for orchestral music. Many members of the orchestra attended the country’s leading conservatories including Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. NSSO, which is the orchestra-in-residence at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School, presents a series of four concerts each year, which include performances of standard orchestral repertoire as well as newly commissioned contemporary pieces. Featured soloists have included promising young Long Island musicians, members of the New York Philharmonic and professional young musicians.
Friends of NSSO, an informal committee first established in 1993, became the non-profit corporation Friends of the North Shore Symphony Orchestra in 2001. Friends assumed full financial support of the orchestra in June of 2004. NSSO was in residency at North Shore High School for almost 25 years as part of the community education program before relocating to Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School in the fall of 2004.
