Villages co-host annual tree lighting on Covert Avenue
Continuing a holiday tradition that is nearly two decades old, officials from Stewart Manor and Floral Park once again pooled their resources and enthusiasm to illuminate Covert Avenue. On Saturday, Dec. 1, residents gathered on the corner of Covert and Chester Avenues for the annual tree lighting.
“The tree lighting is always a wonderful event,” said Stewart Manor Deputy Mayor Robert C. Fabio. “It is sponsored by the Village of Stewart Manor, Village of Floral Park, the Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce and the Stewart Manor Lions Club and really brings the community together to start celebrating the Christmas season.”
Indeed, Covert Avenue is unique in that it unites two villages. The east side of the street is located in Stewart Manor, and the west side of the street is located in Floral Park.
This year’s event once again featured horse and buggy rides, which escorted riders from the municipal parking lot on the corner of Covert and Chester Avenues and proceeded a few blocks east on Chester Avenue. Passage was free of charge, although the chamber requested toy donations in exchange for rides. Toys will be distributed to local charities.
And, of course, children of all ages were greeted by a very special visitor. Santa Claus listened to special Christmas wishes and sat side-by-side passengers on the horse and buggy.
Members of the respective boards of trustees from Floral Park and Stewart Manor were on hand, as the switch was flipped and the tree was lit. Graham Garden Center, located on Tulip Avenue in Franklin Square, donated the tree.
