Do You Hear What I Hear?

Songs and Santa make Western Section’s

holiday tree lighting a success

Spirits were high on Friday evening, Dec. 14, as Garden City’s Western Section hosted a holiday tree lighting. Local families and friends slowly gathered around the tree to talk and laugh, awaiting the many performances, and the big moment. Gallery Pizzeria and Restaurant was a popular place for people of all ages to come in from the cold and enjoy slices of pizza and hot coffee. Tom Whalen, president of The Western Property Owners’ Association (W.P.O.A.), was there to kick off the night, starting with a moment of silence and remembrance for the Newtown, CT tragedy that occurred earlier that day. Special thanks were also given to businesses in the area that provided food, and CupCake Corner for providing free hot chocolate.

The Broadway Bound Dancers performed a number of festive routines choreographed by Debbie Tavernese. Despite the cold, the girls were excited to perform and entertained the crowd with many holiday season songs such as Josh Groban’s “Believe,” “Jingle Bell Rock” and other holiday favorites. In addition to the dance performances, St. Anne’s choir was featured and delighted the audience with Christmas Classics. A particular highlight was Gabrielle Pulice’s stirring version of “Do You Hear What I Hear?”

As rumors of Santa’s arrival spread, the children grew anxious and excited, waiting for St. Nick to show up. When the moment came, a brigade of firetrucks with flashing lights and screaming sirens came around the corner as young ones clustered together trying to catch a glimpse of Kris Kringle. Despite minor technical difficulties, the countdown for Santa Claus to light the Christmas tree ended on a successful high note.
