Rain and above-freezing tempratures Monday helped melt some of the snow that blanketed parts of Long Island in a record 33 inches of the white stuff over the weekend, although the resulting slushy commute is not the only one in the forecast in the week ahead.

Now that the Long Island Expressway is reopened and the Long Island Rail Road is expected to run on a normal schedule for the Monday evening rush hour, rain after sundown is expected to give way to a partly sunny Tuesday in the low 40s before another chance of rain and snow Wednesday afternoon.

Upton-based National Weather Service meteorologists predict there is only a 20-percent chance of percipitation during the day when temps are above-freezing, but the chance of snow doubles Wednesday night with a low of 30. The slight chance of snow continues into Thursday before changing to a chance of rain with a high near 40.

Next weekend is forecast as more of the same with slight chances of rain and snow expected Friday night and Saturday.

NWS also warned drivers to slow down and beware areas of thick fog on Monday.
