Boys Basketball Celebrates Senior Night

Team leaders get grand send off

The 2013 Garden City boys basketball team celebrated Senior Night on Monday, Feb. 10 against Wantagh. The seniors, all of whom are captains this season, are Spencer Bais, Ed Blatz, Dan Bonchonsky, Andrew Granville, and Kyle Skramko. Each of the players made significant contributions to this year’s team.

The boys, joined by their parents at mid-court, were presented photo plaques by coach Larry Steimer before the game honoring their years on the team. The game against Wantagh also featured a ‘white-out’ highlighted by coach Steimer’s very formal three-piece white suit. As a team, the GC boys have fallen just short of getting into the playoffs with two disappointing close losses to end the season.

This group of seniors has put together a nice resume of athletic and academic accomplishments over the past four years, and look to continue that through the second half of the school year.

Spencer Bais, Ed Blatz and Kyle Skramko all were key members of the Long Island Championship Varsity Football Team, with Blatz and Skramko also starters on the 2012 NY State and National Champion Varsity Lacrosse Team. Bonchonsky is a 4-year member of the wind ensemble and is the senior drum major in the Garden City High School marching band while Granville is captain of the Varsity golf team and a member of the varsity tennis team.

Blatz (Georgetown) and Skramko (St. John’s) have committed to play lacrosse in college, while Bais, Bonchonsky and Granville also have some great choices in front of them with the likes of Penn State, Boston College, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Villanova and the NESCAC schools to choose from.
