For the third time in the past four years the Lady Dragons of Division Avenue High School have captured the Conference Title. The girls are undefeated in conference A2 with a 12-0 record. This is the first time since 1995 that the Lady Dragons have not lost a conference game. On Jan. 29, the Blue Dragons beat second place Sewanhaka for the second time this season. This victory not only captured the conference crown but it also secured a high seed in the upcoming county playoffs as well.
Leading the way against a very tough Sewanhaka team was Tiffany Rodriguez who had 15 points and 3 steals. Kristen Aquila, the Dragons leading scorer, added 12 points 5 steals, and 6 rebounds. Laura Stuart chipped in with 6 points and 17 rebounds. Julie Weidler held Sewanhaka’s leading scorer to only four baskets for the entire game. Assist leader and floor general, Taylor Calabrese, added 6 assists and 4 steals in a total team effort.
Victories over Bethpage and Great Neck North followed the Sewanhaka game. Each win was by at least 15 points and may help the Blue Dragons secure the third seed in the Nassau County Playoffs!
On Tuesday Feb. 12, the girls played their final home regular season game against Plainedge. This was also Senior Night and the Lady Dragons honored their four graduating seniors. Before tip-off, Gina Fader, Julie Weidler, Rodriguez, and Kristine Chavez all were singled out for their hard work and dedication. The energy of the pre-game ceremony carried into the night as the Dragons beat Plainedge 58-43. Highlights of the game included Stuart recording her seventh “double-double” of the season.
Another high point was Aquila’s 23 points, which gives her 220 points for the season. This is the second year in a row the Blue Dragons have had a player reach the 200 point mark. Stuart attained that goal last season with 204 points.
