Spring Fling

St. John’s Lutheran Church, corner of Willis Avenue and Cornell Street in Williston Park will be the site of this mission event hosted by the Ladies Aid from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be attic treasures (with something for everyone), bakery goods and the Our Kitchen Café will be serving a moderately-priced light lunch.

Homework Help

At 7 p.m., the Garden City Public Library’s Children’s and  Young Adult’s Departments will be hosting a Tutor.com live homework help demonstration with a representative from Tutor.com. Tutor.com is a website that the Garden City Public Library subscribes to which offers online tutoring and other study resources and is accessible through the Garden City Public Library website (www.gardencitypl.org). The program will include a question and answer session. No registration is required and seating is on a first-come,  first-served basis. The program is open to parents and their  children/teens who wish to learn more about the services  Tutor.com provides to patrons of the Garden City Public  Library. Steinway Lecture

At 10 a.m., a lecture entitled, “Steinway—everything you could possibly want to know,” will be given at the Garden City Community Church. Bill Youse, technical services director at Steinway & Sons, and Barry Tognolini, Steinway Piano Gallery showroom manager will be discussing the past, present and future of Steinway Pianos. Run/Walk For Cure

The Garden City Teacher Association (GCTA) is hosting its 4th Annual GC For A Cure Run/Walk on at Garden City High School. The 5K Run/Walk will take place at 9 a.m. and the 1.5 Mile Run/ Walk will start at 9:15 a.m. All Race/Walk proceeds will benefit Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). In addition, Uniting Against Lung Cancer will be hosting Kites for a Cure, a fun family kite fly to support their lung cancer research grant program. Barbershop Harmony Concert

The Barbershop Harmony Society’s Nassau Mid-Island Chapter takes center stage at Carle Place High School (168 Cherry Lane) to offer “Barbershop – Broadway & Beyond,” 8:07 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door. Earthfest On The Way

The Tanners Pond Environmental Cetner is gearing up for Earthfest, including Earth Run II, a timed 5K race (but you can stroll if you’d like) and a 1- 1/2 obstacle race at the site. It will be a day to celebrate and recognize the tremendous value of volunteers to the community and the environment. The full event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free to the public. Earthfest includes live music, the races, displays by other environmental and volunteer service groups, as well as awards, food and tours of the sanctuary.

26th Annual Angel Ball 

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) will be holding its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery at the Garden City Hotel. Guests will enjoy a red carpet entrance and reception at 6:30pm, followed by dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at 7:30pm. WABC-TV’s Entertainment Reporter Sandy Kenyon will emcee. Seniors: Tea For Two 

Garden City Public Schools will hold its Fourth Annual Afternoon Tea for Senior Citizens and Past Parents on Thursday, May 9 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. The suggested dress code is suit jackets with ties for gentlemen and Sunday dresses with hats for ladies. Tickets for this event are free to Garden City School District senior citizens and past parents, but limited to two per person. There are two ways to acquire tickets for this year’s event: Guests can request tickets by mail by filling out and returning the form on page 20 of the 2013 Spring Continuing Education brochure. The bright yellow brochures will be mailed to all Garden City homes shortly. Guests can pick up tickets in-person at the Administration Building, 56 Cathedral Avenue, on Wednesday, April 24 from 4 – 6 p.m. Please bring a driver’s license or other I.D. for proof of residency. Friends of the Garden City Public Library invite resident adults to free movies on Mondays at 1:30 p.m., from January through April 2013 at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Monthly movies themes are: April “Great Books.” Movie dates are: April 15, 22 & 29. Pick up a copy of the movie flyer at the library. All movies are unrated. Movie titles are subject to change. Seating and parking is limited and on a first-come basis. No tickets are required. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. Clutterers Anonymous

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees. Free Breast Cancer Support Group 

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a new support group for anyone who has done genetic testing and tested positive for breast cancer. The group will meet on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks, beginning on Feb. 25. There is no cost for the group; however pre-registration is required. For information call Sandi Kafenbaum at 516-877-4314, or the Breast Cancer Hotline at 800-877-8077. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. The Nassau County Women’s Bar Foundation and the Alpern Family Foundation sponsor these groups. 

Monthly Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups 

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
