Marie Kelly passed away suddenly on March 3, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband John NYPD (1999), her granddaughter Caroline (1989) and her son Jack (2012). Marie is survived by her loving family; Robert (Jeanne); Patty; (Susan); Kathy (Ed); Jeanne; her 11 grandchildren; Kyleigh, Matthew, Timmy, Meredith (Matt), Lauralee, JB, Beth, Jeremy (Tammy), Gloria, Kerry, Caitlin and her beautiful great-granddaughter, Caroline Kelly. Marie is also survived by her sisters Theresa, Barbara and Rosemary, her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Marie loved to spend time with her family and her friends. Her wonderful attitude, calming ways and sweet personality had been shared with anyone who came in contact with her. She was a woman who accepted people for who they were and she was not judgmental.
Marie was never one to be idle. When her family was grown, she found herself with extra time—so she decided to fulfill a wish and graduated from Adelphi University when she was 65! She was an ardent reader. During the summer, Marie could be found daily at the Garden City Pool. She was a past president and treasurer of the St. Josephs Rosary Altar Society and she was active in the Garden City Social Singles group. Marie was an avid bridge player and believed that fun was part of the game. If you asked Marie when to bid a grand slam, she would tell you, “if the small slam was taken, then bid the grand slam.” Marie was unique and those people that had the opportunity to spend time with her will miss her and her beautiful smile and many acts of kindness
Rev. Msgr. James P. Swiader celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial on March 8 at 10 a.m. at Garden City’s St. Josephs Church. Interment followed at St. Charles Cemetery. Fairchild & Sons of Garden city handled the arrangements.
Marie Kelly’s family is sad that she has passed away but expresses gratitude that she had a good life filled with many people that she cared about and cared about her. Sweet Marie Kelly—until we meet again—rest in peace.
