winning seasons for boys and girls teams
The Garden City Outdoor track teams have had much success through the years and are on track to produce some fantastic results again this season. Both squads have begun the season with wins in several dual and tri meets and will look to continue that trend as they get into the invitational part of their schedules and ultimately the championship rounds.
Boys Coaches Bob Busch and George Dreher have had to deal with a problem that many other coaches would love to have—too many boys coming out for their sport. Because of the success of the past several seasons, the boys team has seen a resurgence on the track, drawing many strong athletes into spring track and field. With a squad that reached almost as high as 80 student athletes, the coaches have had their work cut out for them finding the right mix of speed and endurance to field a powerful team.
The team’s strength this season will be with the middle distance and distance races as senior Andrew Morra looks to lead the way with another stellar season. The depth of the team will start with seniors Andrew Magdich, Dan Finnegan, Mike Padala and Matt Trabold who will toe the line with Morra, as well as junior Tim Feyrer and sophomores Tim Josephs and Thomas Trabold.
Girls Coaches Charlie Cuzzo, Erica Fregosi and Tom Skrivanek have a strong group that returns to the track seeking their seventh consecutive County Championship. With Nassau County Indoor Runner of the Year Emma Gallagher leading the way, the Lady Trojans should be the team to beat this season in Nassau County, as well as one of the best in New York State. With Gallagher’s versatility to compete in almost any race, from sprints to middle distance including the hurdles, the girls team is well rounded.
A perennial powerhouse in the middle distance races, the girls will once again look to dominate there but will also be strong in the sprints and distance races. Along with Gallagher Cuzzo will be able to pull from a veteran group of Laura Jaeger, Jen and Stephanie Gerland, Laurel Fisher, Emily Cafaro, Kelly Lawkins, Kelly Punturo and Jackie O’Hare to produce winning results. Coming off a strong indoor season Jaeger is rounding into one of the top sprinters in the County while both of the Gerland sisters have posted terrific distance times.
