Holtsville IRS Building White Powder Scare Probed

A white powder that was found at the IRS building in Holtsville set off a security scare on Tuesday afternoon, two weeks after tax day, local and federal authorities said.

Suffolk County police Emergency Services Unit officers responded to the building on Waverly Avenue shortly after the suspicious substance was found 1 p.m., a police spokeswoman said.

The powder was found in a plastic bag in the loading dock and was found to be non-toxic, according to a spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service.

Investigators are analyzing the powder, police said.

The incident came two weeks after a Mississippi allegedly mailed letters containing Ricin, a lethal biological warfare agent, to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator and a Mississippi judge.
