Letter: Durkins Thank Community After Devastation

Our lives changed on Jan. 9 forever. We awoke to the high-pitched shrill of smoke alarms and a house filled with smoke and flames. Thank God for the quick response of my husband Robert we just got out of the house in time.

It is very hard to lose your home and all your possessions.  It is very overwhelmingly.

We were deeply touched by the response of our Island Trees and Levittown community, especially Island Trees MIddle School, Mrs. Previdi’s class, Principal Dr. Roger Bloom, and staff and all organizations who had fundraisers for our family.

We would also like to thank our family, friends, coworkers at Winthrop Nephrology, Winthrop Dialysis, Winthrop Endocrinology, coworkers at Verizon, fellow CWA Union Local 1104 members, East End Cares, Girl Scouts, ITSC, Spitfire soccer team, LAC, Love and Learning Center, Island Trees High School Key Club, PBA of East Hampton, Levittown Fire Department, and many others.

Special thanks to our wonderful neighbors on Griddle Lane who took us in to their homes on the day of the fire and have been so kind to us.  We thank you all for your generosity, kindness, love, prayers, and thoughtfulness we received from you all.

You are truly angels here on earth and we are blessed to know you.  Whether it was a phone call, stopping by with clothes, gift cards, money, or a well needed hug you provided it at a much needed time and we will be forever changed by that.

We look forwarded to the future where we can be back on Griddle Lane with our neighbors again.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.  Thank you again.

Elizabeth Durkin and family, Levittown
