Shell Collage for Kids

Inspired by the shell crafts native to the people of the Caribbean, and brought back by sailors to Long Island, the Oyster Bay Historical Society invites young artists to create a masterpiece from the bounty of the sea as a family keepsake or a gift for mom on May 8 from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Weather permitting this event will be held on the lawn behind the Earle-Wightman house and Colonial garden. Space is limited so call 922-5032 for reservations or at obhslibrary@optonline.net. Suitable for grades first to third. Fee: $15 per child with all supplies provided and healthy snacks upon arrival.

Taste of the Town

The Oyster Bay High School PTSA holds A Taste of the Town on May 9 from 7-11 p.m. (rain date – May 16). The event will offer food, wine, beer tastings, raffles and many other treats. Planting Fields presents Movie Night at the Manor House showing North By Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock at 7 p.m. (rain or shine). RR Dining Al Fresco

Planting Fields presents a book lecture, signing and dinner under the stars at Dining By Rail at the Manor House with James D. Porterfield from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $55 members and $75 non members. Hear author James D. Porterfield speak about his book, Dining By Rail, and the history of dining in style on the wheels. Have dinner under the stars and savor a specially prepared menu from Porterfield’s book of rail recipes of famous passenger trains in America. Books will be available to purchase at the event and can be signed by the author. FOSH Lecture

The Friends of Sagamore Hill host the third in the Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series, held in Christ Church Parish Hall, 61 East Main Street on Thursday, May 16. Photographer Xiomáro, draws on his experience photographing the interior of the Roosevelt home at Sagamore Hill. Lectures begin at 7 p.m. Admission and refreshments are free to all. Joint Forum on Shore Road

The East Norwich and Oyster Bay Civic Associations meet May 16 for an open forum on Shore Road. Rosemarie Colvin has arranged for Michael Martino, press secretary of the NC DPW and Donna Boyle, NC public works project engineer, including for Shore Road: to discuss the endeavor and answer questions about safety. “There is nowhere to pull off the road in an emergency,” said Colvin. It will be held at the Italian American Citizens Club at 48 Summit Street at 7:30 p.m. There are some bright spots, the county is burying the telephone lines, working on better drainage and there may be a walkway emerging as the work is completed. Bluegrass Party at the Manor House

Planting Fields presents a Bluegrass party at the Manor House in honor of their exhibit on the Virginia Railroad. Live music with Mark Silver and the Stonethrowers from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets: $30 members/$50 non-members. Enjoy live blue grass music, enjoy rail- inspired hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails while touring the railway exhibition about the Coe family fortune and the Virginian Railway. Learn Model Railroading

Planting Fields presents a Trackside Workshop: Making a Model Train Layout with the trainmaster of Babylon Model Railroading Club on May 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Manor House. Free event but reservations are required. Learn how to lay the first rails of your model train display, to question and answer problem-solving of model trains, scene making, and other fun challenges of model railroading. Gallery Talk

Gallery Talk presented on May 18 by exhibition curator/photographer Xiomáro on his exhibit How I Love Sagamore Hill, pictures taken of Sagamore Hill uncovered. He photographed TR’s home at Sagamore Hill National Historic Park as it was being readied for restoration. Talk at the Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street, from 2 to 3 p.m. Free. Run for Literacy

Rayham Hall Museum hosts a cocktail party fundraiser for their new exhibit, With You Were Here on May 19. It will show views of Oyster Bay then and now.
