Rachel J. Kim competed in the New York State Finals of National History Day on April 29. Among tough competition, the Herricks Middle School eighth-grader took third place in the state for her individual performance titled “Separate is NOT Equal: Brown v. Board of Education.”
This is the first time a Herricks Middle School student has advanced to the New York State Finals and Kim’s project reflected a great deal of time, research and dedication.
Her ten-minute performance, in which she portrayed three different characters, addressed the struggles of integration at Little Rock Central High School in 1957 as well as current day issues surrounding integration. Kim’s research and script stood out among contributions from other schools around the state.
