Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free visual lecture, Color In Your Garden Throughout The Year, with Nassau County Master Gardener Barbara Ann Levine at 2 p.m. at the library located at 60 Seventh St. Seating and parking are limited and on a first-come basis. The guest speaker will share her expertise in creating gardens that show colorful flowers during the entire year—including winter. Gain fascinating insights about succession planting. Summer Entertaining Workshop

Nothing is as enchanting as a warm summer afternoon with the sun fading and a cool breeze. This is the time for a relaxed meal on your deck or by the pool or beach. Join Chef Barbara Sheridan at the Garden City Public Library at 1:30 p.m. to learn how to get ready for the summer and prepare a menu of garden fresh chilled summer soup, a medley of salads, apple broccoli chicken bowtie pasta and a platter of margarita chicken salad, and finish off with a special dessert. Registration begins in person on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. and is limited to adult Garden City Library cardholders.

Bugs Bower Lecture

Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free lecture, “Life in the Music Business,” with Garden City resident “Bugs” Bower. The legendary music arranger/producer/publisher will be appearing on at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library located at 60 Seventh St. Seating and parking are limited and on a first-come basis. Bower will be telling fascinating stories about famous TV & recording super stars accompanied by their songs of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. His fast-paced life began at Julliard School of Music where he wrote his first music books. During this program he will share excerpts from his new book, Nice Stories about Nice People— highlights from his personal experiences in the music business. Among the artists he’s worked with are Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Steve Allen, Joe Pesci, Cab Calloway, Liza Minelli, Sammy Kaye, Percy Faith, Bobby Rydell, the Jimmy Dorsey and Charley Barnet Bands, Kool & The Gang, and many more.

Library Hosts Charlene Schwartz Kalin Exhibit

From June 2–28, the Garden City Public Library’s gallery will be exhibiting a solo watercolor show by Charlene Schwartz Kalin entitled “Life Around Us.” View colorful paintings of many topics created by this talented Long Island artist. Kalin’s professional art career began when she earned an associates degree in commercial art while studying at F.I.T. and NYC Community College. She received a scholarship to Brooklyn Museum School of Fine Arts. Her work for a New York City ad agency gave Kalin the experience she needed to open Sunflower Studios in Manhattan. The artist subsequently freelanced in graphic design for newspapers. Charlene is currently a member of the Art League of Nassau County and the National Art League. Her watercolor paintings have received many awards during juried shows. Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Clutterers Anonymous

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave., in Westbury. There are no dues or fees. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
