Gallagher leads the Lady Trojans to
Seventh Straight County Championship
The Garden City Girls track and field team has had a long run of success and this season they added their seventh consecutive County Championship under the direction of coaches Charlie Cuzzo, Erica Fregosi and Tom Skrivanek.
The girls have had an impressive season with many terrific runs that culminated with the County Championship at Mitchell Field on May 22. Facing a strong challenge from several teams, Garden City was able to pull away and lock up the championship on Day 2 after a phenomenal Day 1. On the first day of the championship meet, the Lady Trojans were dominant on the track as they won each of the events that they ran putting them ahead by 30 points.
Leading the way was Emma Gallagher, who produced victories in the 800-meter run and the 400-intermediate hurdles. She followed those up with her third victory of the meet in the 400-meter race on Wednesday. Gallagher has put a stamp on this track season with many dominating performances and is currently ranked number one in the state in the 400 hurdles, second in the 400 and fifth in the 800 meters.
Also on Day 1, other girls taking home a County Championship were Laura Jaeger in the 100-meter sprint, Stephanie Gerland in the 3,000 meters and the 4×400 relay of Jaeger, Kelly Lawkins, Emily Cafaro and Kelly Punturo.
Other contributors scoring Day 1 points for the Trojans were Punturo with a second place finish and Julia Forbes with a sixth place in the 400 hurdles, Lawkins with a sixth place finish in the 100-meter sprint and Stephanie and Jen Gerland finished fifth and sixth in the 800-meter race with Jen finishing fourth in the 3,000.
Day 2 was almost as good as Day 1 as the girls continued their dominance on the track and came away with some points in the field as well. Garnering the team’s lone points in the field was freshman Tiana Biscone, who brought home a second place finish in the high jump.
Stephanie Gerland took home her second championship of the meet with a big win in the 1,500-meter race, while sister Jennifer took home second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. The 400-meter race provided a glimpse of the depth as not only did Gallagher win the race, Laura Jaeger took second and Emily Cafaro finished fifth.
Next up for the girls is the state qualifier meet and a shot at taking the trip to Middleton, NY to run against the best that New York State has to offer.
