FOSH Landscaping Project
The Friends of Sagamore Hill (FOSH) holds a ribbon cutting for a new flowerbed for the park entrance welcome sign at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site on June 12, at 5:30 p.m. The project of park volunteer Margarethe Randall with Peter Hogarty of Ireland Gannon Associates, it includes some of Mrs. Edith Roosevelt’s favorite plantings: Coreopsis, Montauk Daisy and Clematis. FOSH funded the project with over $4,000 from the community and its members. The landscape project was designed by the National Park Service’s Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and was spearheaded by Friends board member Michael Vezzi. TR’s Police Awards
The Annual Police Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 13 at 10 a.m. at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. The awards recognize a police officer from Nassau County and one from Suffolk, who have returned to duty after experiencing a severe health problem in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s battle to overcome asthma as well as his term as NYC Police Commissioner. In addition to the stories of these two officers, there will be the pipe and drum bands of both counties.
FYI: Tom Ross Going to Lady Liberty
Superintendent Tom Ross has been tapped to supply his expertise in helping ready the Statue of Liberty NHS for its reopening on July 4 and the operation of that site through the peak summer visitation period. Tom will be on temporary duty on Liberty Island from June 2 through September 29. He will be serving as Deputy Superinten- dent/Chief of Operations. During Tom’s absence, the various department chiefs at SAHI will rotate as acting superintendent. We wish Tom all the best. For more information please call 516-922-4788.

OB Drill and Parade
The Oyster Bay Fire Company No. 1 hosts the Fifth Battalion Drill and Parade on Saturday, June 15. The Old Fashioned Drill starts at 10 a.m. Volunteers will be selling food and you can sit on the grandstand and watch the action. The parade starts at 6 p.m. with award presentations following.
Alzheimer’s Regatta
Oakcliff Sailing Center teams up with Sagamore Yacht Club and the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in a regatta on June 15. Race using your own boat, or one from Oakcliff. And, said Dawn Riley, OSC executive director, “For something completely different you can do a ‘Poker run’ around West Harbor on board a kayak or paddleboard.’ There is no entry fee but you are asked to raise funds for Alzheimer’s.” Check their website for more information.

Monica Randall Lecture
With the newest Great Gatsby movie back on the screen, the Oyster Bay Historical Society presents author Monica Randall here with a colorful slide presentation at noon, June 16, at their annual meeting at Koenig Center, 20 Summit Street, OB. The lecture is based on her book Mansions of the Gold Coast, which includes rare photos of the castle that inspired Fitzgerald to write The Great Gatsby. That original Gatsby mansion has been bulldozed and replaced by split levels. Hear little-known details of the Woodward murder case, the mysterious F.W. Woolworth mansion Winfield, and Ferguson Castle, with its floors paved with tombstones. Refreshments follow in the garden. Call 922-5032 for information.
Opera Night
Founder Isabella Eredita Johnson will bring her group of gifted musicians to perform arias from operas, as well as art songs at Christ Church at 4 p.m. on June 16. The North Shore Land Alliance is asking for volunteers to come out and “pull” for the environment. President Lisa Ott said, “It’s mile-a-minute season.” The dreaded mile-a-minute vine is making its mark on Long Island as never before. Known for its rapid growth (up to six inches in a day) this invasive pest is outcompeting desirable native vegetation. The pull starts at 9:30 a.m., on Thursdays, June 27, July 11; and Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 28. Additional times may be arranged for groups. Sponsored by BMW of Oyster Bay they will bring their newest model cars for viewing on Audrey Avenue around the Bandstand. Bring a chair if desired. All steps are geared for singles and couples alike. Louis del Prete will take the lead on July 5 with music from the 1940’s right up to today. Included will be line dancing, Latin music, ballroom, and any other style desired.

Preservation Awards
The Advocates for Historic Preservation and Education Awards reception takes place on July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Woodlands (the mansion at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course on South Woods Road, Woodbury). The honorees are Long Islanders who have distinguished themselves as advocates for history’s vital role in our lives today. The event raises funds in support of the Oyster Bay Historical Society’s ongoing programs and services, including exhibitions, lectures, book signings, workshops, and other community events.
