The 47th annual Celebrity Sports Night at The Viscardi Center in Albertson was held on May 16 to raise funds for educational programs serving children, adolescents and adults with disabilities. The event featured several notable individuals such as former NFL stars Joe Namath and Joe Theismann—both Super Bowl Champions—as well as former TNA World Heavyweight Champion Mick Foley.
The event was attended by more than 600 guests, including 35 athletes and celebrities.
“For 47 years we have been privileged to have sports legends and personalities attend this event, with many returning year after year,” said John D. Kemp, President and CEO of The Viscardi Center. “Once they come and see the children and adults with disabilities for themselves, they are forever touched in a way they might not have initially expected.”
Joe Theismann received the Roy Campanella Award. “Nothing will ever mean more to me than the honor that you bestow on me tonight—because of these young men and young women.” He added, “Tonight has been an eye-opener for me… These young men and young women at this school here are the true heroes .”
The students were able to meet the athletes and got autographs from players such as Mookie Wilson, Bud Harrelson, Bobby Nystrom and Sean Landeta.
The event’s live auction included seats for 15 in the Mets’ owner’s luxury suite at Citi Field and tickets to the 2014 NCAA Final Four. Next year’s event is scheduled for May 15, 2014.
