Flood Advisory for Long Island Lifted

Long Island was under a flood advisory as thunderstorms threatened to bring torrential downpours to the New York metro area, although LI is expected to duck the worst of the weather.

The advisory was issued Monday afternoon as up to three-quarters of an inch of rain an hour is forecast to hit the Island through 2:30 p.m., according to Upton-based National Weather Service meteorologists.

“Excessive runoff from this storm will cause flooding of urban areas,” NWS said in the statement, adding that impacted areas will likely include “highways…streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.”

Driver are warned not to try and pass through heavily flooded areas and instead find another route if they encounter deep water in roadways.

The rain may continue into Tuesday and Wednesday but the forecast for the 4th of July on Thursday is partly sunny in the 80s, same as the rest of the holiday weekend.
