New York State police are cracking down on speeding and other traffic violations this week in a campaign designed to reduce deadly crashes on Long Island and statewide.

About one third of fatal vehicle crashes are caused in part by speeding drivers, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who announced the enforcement blitz dubbed “Speed Week,” which runs through Saturday.

“Many of our highway deaths and injuries could be prevented if drivers would comply with speed limits and other rules of the road,” New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said.

Troopers, including those in unmarked patrol vehicles, will also be watching for distracted or impaired drivers, seatbelt violations and drivers are violating the “Move Over Law.”
