Fall Benefit Yard Sale
The Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Environmental Center is pleased to announce its fall benefit yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the sanctuary. (Raindate is Saturday, Sept. 14.) The bird sanctuary is located opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd. The profits from the rental spaces at the sale will benefit the sanctuary and will be used for ongoing environmental educational programs and improvements at the site. Do you hate the idea of having your own garage sale with the hassle of putting up posters all over town, advertising and people tromping on your lawn? This fall, 10-by-17-foot spaces may be reserved for $45, providing sellers with an opportunity to sell their own garage sale items. Donations and fees are tax deductible. If you wish to reserve a spot, contact Liz Bailey at emb158@aol.com or 516-248 8447. The GCBS/TPEC is located opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd., north of Stewart Avenue and south of Jericho Turnpike. The site is open to the public on weekends from March through November, from noon to 5 p.m., during the summer from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. Garden City Republican Club Meeting
The Garden City Republican Club will meet at the Garden City Senior Center on Golf Club Lane and Eleventh Street at 8 p.m.. The evening’s speaker will be Laura Schaefer, the GOP candidate for Nassau County Legislator. Schaefer grew up in Westbury, graduated from Adelphi University and has a juris doctorate from Hofstra University School of Law. Planks in her platform include lowering taxes, fighting unfair regulations and creating high-quality jobs. Calageros Restaurant will provide refreshments and two gift certificates for a raffle. All are welcome.

Rock & Roll Time Machine
Friends of the Garden City Public Library will sponsor a free concert, “A Musical History Tour of Rock & Roll, Doo-Wop & Pop,” by The Vic Vincent Group on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library at 60 Seventh St. Seating and parking are limited and on a first-come basis. During this one-hour program, the Vic Vincent Group will be playing material spanning the eras of early rock & roll, doo-wop, & pop dating back to the 1950’s. Vocals will be performed by Vic (also on keyboard & guitar), Bill on percussion, and Jim on sax and trumpet. Here are some of the artists whose songs you can expect to hear: Elvis Presley, Bill Haley & the Comets, Dion & the Belmonts, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, Four Seasons, The Beatles and Roy Orbison are among the early rock ‘n’ rollers represented. Doo-wop aficionados are promised their fill of the Five Satins, Duprees, Del Vikings, and Little Anthony & the Imperials. And lovers of classic pop will be treated to fare originally sung by Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin and Michael Buble. Story-telling country music lovers will enjoy tunes of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell and Alabama.

Oktoberfest 2013
The Second Annual Oktoberfest at Resurrection Lutheran Church from 4 to 10:30 p.m. There will be activities for children and families during the afternoon, including games, fall festivities, German music, German food and soft drinks. Starting at 7, thefocus moves to adults with authentic Oktoberfest music provided by The Luchow Quartet. German food continues through the evening, imported German beer and wine may be purchased separately. Free commemorative mug. Net proceeds support the missions of Resurrection. Event will take place under a tent on the church lawn along Emmet Place by the entrance to the church on 420 Stewart Ave. Advance tickets are $25; $10, age 12 and under (children 3 and under free) through Sept. 28. Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program
If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State.
