Police Probe ‘Suspicious’ Hempstead Fire

Nassau County police are investigating a fire that ripped through a Hempstead home early Saturday morning.

The fire, which investigators called “suspicious,” started at around 1:26 a.m. at a home on Cornwall Lane, police said.

Detectives said a Hempstead police officer on patrol spotted the blaze and helped evacuate eight people inside the burning home.

The Hempstead Fire Department also arrived on scene with a team of 50 firefighters to battle the blaze, which started in the back of home, police said.

The Arson Bomb Squad and Nassau County Fire Marshall will continue the investigation, police said. Though there was no immediate cause for the fire, police deemed it “suspicious at this time,” police said.

Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the fire to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are anonymous.
