East Woods Welcomes New Athletic Director

The beginning of the 2013 – 2014 school year has brought many great additions to East Woods School. The new Head of School, Matthew Bradley, has been warmly welcomed by students, parents, and faculty. In addition, the school is happy to announce the appointment of Richard Hill as the new Athletic Director and fifth and sixth grade science and math teacher. What makes this appointment especially exciting for the school is not only that Richard Hill is a seasoned teacher and an impressive athlete, but he is also an East Woods graduate, class of 2000.

Hill arrives at East Woods via Baltimore, where he spent the last several years. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees with honors from Johns Hopkins University where he was a four year member of the football team. He earned MVP and all-conference honors for his outstanding play and sportsmanship. Hill’s master of art in teaching was in mathematics, and he is certified in mathematics for grades 7 to 12 and science for grades five to nine. For the past five years, he has been teaching both mathematics and science in middle and high school in Baltimore public schools.

In addition, he has been a youth, high school and college football coach, a track and field coach, and for two summers was a counselor at the Johns Hopkins Summer Sports Camp. Hill is also the uncle of Jaylynn Alexander, a fifth-grader at East Woods.

Hill always knew he wanted to work with children. He thought briefly about attending medical school to study pediatrics, but realized that teaching was truly his calling. As a self-proclaimed “math and science person” and a lifelong athlete, teaching and coaching at East Woods is the perfect fit. He is enjoying working with students who are focused and dedicated to their studies and their futures. He is also quite pleased that his high expectations of coming back to East Woods as a teacher have been met. He greatly appreciates the warm, nurturing environment of the school, the supportive family involvement, and the well-organized and well-run school administration at East Woods.  While he is very happy to be back, he is also eagerly anticipating his wedding to Victoria Flores Fernandes slated for October 2014.

The fall season for both athletics and academics is off to a great start at East Woods, thanks in no small part to the addition of Richard Hill.
