Senior Ryan McEvoy of Oyster Bay High School was selected as a National Merit Semifinalist this year. The 2012 PSAT/NMSQT served as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million entrants to the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Selection Index scores of students who met program participation requirements were used to designate a pool of about 16,000 semifinalists on a state allocation basis. Semifinalists are the highest scorers in each of the 50 states and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors. McEvoy was selected as one of these semifinalists. He will now compete to advance to National Merit Finalist standing which can potentially earn him a scholarship for college of up to $2,500.
McEvoy is actively involved in the college application process as he has narrowed down his search to 14 schools. Having attended two Oyster Bay High School College Awareness trips, McEvoy feels that he has a better idea of what type of school is right for him. He looks to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.
As the staff of the Oyster Bay High School Counseling Center will advise, colleges look for well-rounded students who not only excel academically but can show involvement in other activities as well. McEvoy certainly is in good standing in this regard. While at OBHS, he has been a valuable leader on the Varsity Soccer team. He also has run winter and spring track and is a member of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions).
McEvoy’s uncle, John McEvoy, is a trustee on the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education and shares in the pride and celebration of Ryan’s accomplishments.
