Centennial Soccer Club hosts Annual Golf Classic
The Garden City Centennials held their 3rd Annual Golf Classic to help support the annual scholarships that are handed out to high school seniors that have competed in the Centennial Programs for at least five years including participation in Intramurals, Travel, Referees, and/or TOPSoccer. The scholarship winners are chosen based on commitment to soccer, an essay about lessons learned in sportsmanship, community service, recommendations and academic achievement.
Through the end of the 2012 school year, The Centennials have awarded 30 scholarships aggregating to over $57,000. At least four scholarships, of a minimum of $1000, each will again be awarded next spring. The 2012 winners of the scholarship were current college freshman Matthew Trabold, Kelsey Tierney, Elizabeth Kane, Courtney Studdert, Mark Schwendemann and Kevin Mercadante.
The scholarship money distributed to these seniors is raised by proceeds from Soccerfest, private donations and the Centennial annual golf outing.
The golf outing this year drew the largest group of golfers, hackers and duffers in the past three years with 20 foursomes heading out to play the course at Wheatley Hills Golf Club last month. The hospitality at Wheatley Hills, of the staff and the Centennial Golf Committee, was apparent from the moment the players got to the course. With a hot and cold buffet brunch, lunch at the turn and a full dinner afterwards, the attendees were well fed.
During the day there were also a number of chances for the attendees to win door prizes, raffles and blind auction items ranging from a number of golf clubs, sporting memorabilia and gift certificates.
On the course the players enjoyed perfect weather and the foursome of Chris DeSantis, Tom Granville, Steve Haggerty and Rich Honan to advantage of a course in great condition to win the low gross prize as the winning foursome. They unseated returning champs Rob Malhame and Rich Carpentierre by one stroke – and arguably it was the putting of Carpentierre that held them back until he began using a borrowed white putter.
In addition to the overall winners the low net winners were Chris Caporicci, Robert Cappello, Mike Polo and Vin Suba. The longest drive was won by Chris DeSantis as he pounded a ball down the middle of the fairway. While on the flip side it was Peter Kenny and Rob Reinhardt pitching the ball to win the closest to the pin as there ‘greenies’ were too close to determine one winner.
Finally there was a valiant effort by Mike Polo as he was one rotation away from sinking a hole in one and a new Ford Escape.
