Hicksville Sweet Shop has been serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert to the community for 88 years. While the setup of the luncheonette hasn’t changed much since they opened in 1925, the menu changes day by day.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts, with a huge variety of food options to choose from. Sandwiches, wraps, gyros, seafood, burgers, soups, and salads, are just a few of the options available.
“We’re very Mom and Pop,” said Manager Harry Zouros. “We make everything from scratch. All of the food is handmade, including the soups, dressings, salads, ice cream, and pies.”
The shop has a fair share of regulars and Zouros says they see many of the same people once, or even twice a day.
Hicksville Sweet Shop has a different special every day. “Mondays we usually have meatloaf, or beef stew or beef goulash,” said Zouros. “Fridays are fishcakes and macaroni, which is a big deal for our customers. Fridays we have a lot of fish dishes for the people who don’t eat meat that day.”
Chicken pot pies and grilled chicken dishes are popular, and the luncheonette is also known for their sauerbraten dumplings, a German dish. “We actually have a list of about 100 people that we call to tell we’re having it,” said Zouros.
A place with “Sweet Shop” in its name can’t get away with not serving dessert. The shop makes pies, rice pudding, milkshakes, cream pies, and Belgian waffle sundaes, as well as their own ice cream. They also sell homemade chocolates for all occasions.
The Hicksville Sweet Shop has been feeding and accommodating its customers for nearly 90 years. The business originally opened across the street from its current location. When Broadway was widened in the 1960’s, the business moved to 75 Broadway in Hicksville, where it still stands.
“The original name was Teddy’s Sweet Shop back in 1925,” said Zouros. “Eventually, it became Hicksville Sweet Shop.” Zouros has grown up in the shop, since his father, Phillip is the owner. The store has had four owners, and Phillip has been the owner of the sweet shop the longest, owning it since 1974.
Hicksville Sweet Shop is located at 75 Broadway.
