The Nassau County Veterans Service Agency, along with many of the local veterans’ organizations, helped bring the county’s annual Veterans Day parade back to life, with the inaugural event kicking off in Levittown this weekend. The annual veterans’ parade was rumored to have taken place many years ago throughout various neighborhoods in the county.
The First Annual Veterans Day marchers assembled at Gardiners Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown and proceeded west, down Hempstead Turnpike to the Levittown Veterans Memorial Park in front of the public library.
The parade featured dozens of local veterans and their affiliated organizations including the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) from such as Levittown, Massapequa, Williston Park, Glen Cove, Seaford, Wantagh, Port Washington, Hicksville, and Farmingdale posts. Other organizations in attendance included the Jewish Wars Veterans, United Veterans Organization (UVO), AMVETS, Vietnam War Veterans Chapter 82, Catholic War Veterans, Korean War
Veterans, Nassau County Auxiliary, and Blue Star Mothers.
The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration provided a convoy of armored vehicles; the American Legion Riders, Blue Knights and many other motorcycle riding organizations ushered the parade into the ceremonies, along with Nassau County Police units.
The Island Trees, MacArthur, and Division Avenue high schools participated with their choir, marching bands. This year’s parade was dedicated to returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
