Armao LLP’s Karen Auer runs for charity in 5K
Karen Auer, principal in the Garden City certified public accounting firm of Armao LLP, came in 55th place among 1,200 runners in the Long Island installment of last month’s national Divas Half Marathon & 5K Series. This was Auer’s first time to run in an organized race.
Auer states, “Running is my passion. I do it for physical well-being, for recreation, to nurture my spirit and to inspire my two young daughters that we can accomplish anything we put our minds to.” Auer and her family spend countless hours at Tobay, Long Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout, walking, swimming and enjoying all the seasonal outdoor activities that Long Island has to offer.
Karen Auer began her accounting career 15 years ago as a senior accountant, rising to her current leadership role in the firm. Since 1998, Karen has specialized exclusively in auditing, financial reporting and government reporting as it pertains to labor unions, Taft-Hartley multi-employer benefit plans and not-for-profit organizations. She supervises some of the firm’s largest engagements with great attention to detail and professionalism.
The official benefiting charity of the Divas Half Marathon & 5K Series is the Forever Young Foundation of Florida, Inc., established in 2012 by a group of colleagues and friends who were touched by one individual whose life was too short but so very inspiring. Jake Young was the course director for the Divas Half Marathon & 5K Series from 2010 to 2012. The Forever Young Foundation supports other young people, who like Jake, have that fire in their hearts, that impeccable work ethic but lack financial support to further their education.
The Divas Half Marathon & 5K Series is also proud to support local and national charities making a difference in women’s lives. In 1990, the chance of developing breast cancer for a woman on Long Island was one in nine. Today it is one in eight; in parts of Suffolk County one in seven. Progress has been made but not enough. This is an uphill battle yet we believe we can win. Finally there is a place to go in Long Island to avoid the profound isolation, despair and fear often felt by people with cancer. At Hewlett House, people with cancer and their families can become involved in networking and receive support from people going through similar experiences.
