Members of American Legion Post 1711 of Levittown led by Commander Joe Simpson, County Executive Ed Mangano, Legislator Dennis Dunne, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Council 9592 members lead by Commander Barry Scheu recently gathered to officially change the name of Polaris Field to Vietnam Veterans’s Memorial Field.
“Those veterans of this community spent their childhoods playing on the fields and streets of these neighborhoods,” said County Executive Mangano. “Today we honor their sacrifice and service. This field will stand in honor of these brave men, 29 of whom did not make it home to Levittown.”
Levittown lost 29 residents in the Vietnam War, and countless others served during those years.
County Executive Mangano also honored another long-time Levittown resident, Nicholas Sguigna, by renaming a field in his honor. “Nick is a dedicated member of this community, a friend, and a neighbor to all,” said Mangano. “Nick is also a Vietnam veteran, which only further illustrates his dedication to his community and his country.
As president of Island Trees Baseball for more than 40 years, Sguigna has also mentored and guided young athletes in the program.
