Cafe Dilemma Lunch & Learn Series

The Mid-Island Y JCC, 45 Manetto Hill Rd., presents a different Rabbi from the community each week to teach a class on interesting and current topics from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hot beverages will be provide. Free Head, Neck and Oral Cancer Screenings

North Shore-LIJ Health System will have free screenings for head, neck and oral cancers at the hospital located at 888 Old Country Rd. in Plainview from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14. The screenings will be performed by a board certified North Shore-LIJ Health System ear, nose and throat physician and oral surgeon. Head and neck cancers make up about three percent of all the cancers in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute. Good Life Health and Wellness Senior Fair

On Friday, Nov. 15 between 10 am and 2 p.m., the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Rd., in cooperation with Atria Plainview Senior Living invite guests to the Good Life Health and Wellness Senior Fair. Fun, food and lots of information will be available. Enjoy exercise classes, a cooking demonstration by the charming executive chef of Atria, Chef Justin, and educational seminars on Medicare, rehab, and veterans benefits. Visit the vendor tables in the art gallery to learn about wonderful organizations that serve our community, including Plainview-Old Bethpage Cares, Caring Transitions, Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue and resources from the Library itself. North Shore Symphony Orchestra Opening Concert

The North Shore Symphony Orchestra will present the opening concert of 2013-2014, its 53rd Season, on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. at Stratford Road School, 33 Bedford Rd. in Plainview. The Symphony’s entire 2013-2014 season is focused on Orchestral Favorites and this first concert will include Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique,” Wagner’s Prelude to “Die Meistersinger” and feature winners of the Concert Festival Competition – pianists Brielle Perez and Allison Jin, and Long Island cellist Solomon Choi in performances of movements from Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor and Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Major, Op. 33. Conducted by the Symphony Music Director & Conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will bring together the talents of young performers and the North Shore Symphony Orchestra, which in its 53rd Season is Long Island’s most established community orchestra. Tickets are General Admission, $15 and Senior/Student $12 and may be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to the concert. Chinese Auction

The Plainview Reformed Church, 560 Old Bethpage Rd., is hosting a Chinese Auction on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. It will feature fun, Italian food, prizes and a chance to win super gifts. Admission is $25 and includes dinner, beverages, homemade desserts and an envelope with 10 auction tickets. Changing the Ch’i in Your Life

Internationally recognized Feng Shui author, educator and consultant William Spear presents “Changing the Ch’i in Your Life: The Inner Bagua of Feng Shui” at the BTE Center for Conscious Living at Nassau Hall, 1864 Muttontown Rd. In this full day presentation, Spear will expand beyond linear layouts, “Dos and Don’ts,” wind chimes and water fountains, to offer a deeper understanding of the energetics and flow of Ch’i in interior and exterior spaces as well as our human nature. This lecture is geared to holistic health, spirituality, feng shui and design enthusiasts, as well as the seasoned feng shui practitioner. Join a movement to impact the greater good by promoting positive change in your life and in our world.

Chanukah Service

Temple B’nai Torah, 2900 Jerusalem Avenue, and Oakfield Avenue will celebrate a community Chanukah service on Friday,  Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring their Menorah and four candles: one for the first two nights of Chanukah, and one for the shamash, also known as the service candle, used to light the other candles on the menorah. Hear the story of the Maccabees, and the magic of the small amount of oil that lasted for eight days.

Babies And BimBam

A fun, interactive class is coming up at HANC of Plainview for children turning 2 by December 31. Cost is $50 for six classes, or pay-as-you-go for $10 per class. Classes will be meeting on Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information, contact shecht@hanc.org, or call 681-5922.

Miscarriage Support Group

A safe, confidential, supportive environment in which to talk about what you have been through, your reactions and feelings, and how to move forward. You are not alone! Facilitated by a professional therapist. Meetings held on three consecutive Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. in the Hicksville-Plainview area. $60 for three meetings. Free Veterinary Lectures

Once a month through December, Long Island Cat Fanciers sponsors free lectures given by top local veterinarians on topics relevant to dog and cat owners. All members of the public are welcome to attend. The lectures are generally held on the first Monday of each month at the Town of Oyster Bay Syosset-Woodbury Community Center, 7900 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, at 7:45 p.m. For more information, call 631-277-3844.

Non-Profit Support Group Clutterers Anonymous (CLA)

A 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets at the following locations: Thursdays, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave, Westbury first and third Friday, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the School of the Community Reformed Church, 90 Plandome Rd, Manhasset.  Monday evenings, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Road, Plainview.
