Retired NCPD Officer, 81, Killed in Locust Valley Fire

A retired Nassau County police officer was killed in a Friday afternoon fire in Locust Valley, police said.

The former police officer, 81-year-old Peter Zukas, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Zukas, a member of the NCPD for 27 years, retired in 1991, police said.

The blaze at 17 2nd Avenue broke out just before 1:30 p.m. The rear of the home was engulfed in flames when responding officers arrived, police said.

Detectives said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Zukas was the second person affiliated with the NCPD to die this week. A Nassau police detective was killed in an early-morning crash Wednesday when his crossover SUV crashed into a tractor trailer as he was exiting the Northern State Parkway.
