News 12 Long Island has selected senior Katrina Garry of Locust Valley as a News 12 Long Island Scholar Athlete for the 2013-14 season. Now in its 27th year, the weekly award recognizes outstanding ability by high school seniors in athletics, scholarship, leadership and service to others.
Garry was interviewed by News 12 about her achievements and this award earlier this month; the segment aired Wednesday, Nov. 6 and can be viewed by heading to www.longisland.news12.com/multimedia/scholar-athlete-trina-garry-1.6394824.
The Scholar Athlete Award Program also requires outstanding participation in two or more sports, rigorous SAT scores and cumulative GPA, as well as significant examples of leadership and service to others, including the “ability to get along with others, modesty and sportsmanship.”
In addition to the three varsity sports Garry regularly plays a year — varsity cross country, varsity winter track and varsity spring track — she also has earned All-Division, All-County, All-Conference and All-State honors in those sports.
News 12 chooses 30 winners from Suffolk and Nassau counties over the course of each year and all winners are honored at a year-end dinner in June, as well as the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship check. Two of the 30 honorees will also receive an additional $2,000 scholarship check, which is distributed at the banquet in June.
