The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is holding its annual holiday fair on Saturday, Dec. 7, and promising the historic Sands-Willets House at 336 Port Washington Blvd. “will be decorated from top to bottom,” with ornaments, greenery and bows.
There will be live music in the parlor and caroling on the porch, complete with hot spiced cider and a “Cookie Holiday Tree.”
New this year will be the Elf’s Workshop for kids and families that includes crafts and activities. Help make a life-sized “Paper Quilt” or a special orange-and-clove pomander ornament. There will be Story Hour with the Elves at select times. Larry and Lynne Chrapliwy, the historical society’s resident artists, will demonstrate painting and work on a special torn paper craft with the children, as well as cookie decorating.
The Holiday Fair will also include the debut of a new exhibit: “The Art of Quilting: Fibers, Fabrics & Fashion,” featuring hundreds of years of quilting styles that have shaped the contemporary view of this art form.
Over 50 quilts and coverlets from the historical society’s collection will be on display in what it calls “one of the finest groupings of these textiles on Long Island.” The day will feature cotton patchwork quilts, a Trapunto quilt, flour sack quilt, quilts of velvets and silks, a flag quilt, and woven coverlets, all with stories behind them.
Just in time for holiday shopping, the vintage jewelry boutique will be open and there will be lots of handcrafted gifts available for sale. The double living room will be decked with special gift items, including hand pressed floral stationery, tiny chenille animals, and miniature holiday oil paintings.
On the porch, fresh greenery wreaths will be available for sale with the option to add special bows and ornaments. Specialty hand-created wreaths will adorn the windows of the Sands-Willets House and will also be for sale.
The “Cow Neck Café” in the Sands-Willets dining room will be serving soups and crusty hot bread. Home-made treats and holiday cookies to eat or take home will be available.
