The Garvies Point Museum and Preserve—located at 50 Barry Dr. in Glen Cove—recently celebrated Thanksgiving with its annual Native American Feast, on Nov. 23. The feast, which celebrates Native American culture in the Northeast, has been held a weekend before Thanksgiving for over the past 25 years.
At the event, participants enjoyed hands-on activities including pottery making, face painting with natural pigments, artifacts and tool technology, atlatl spear throwing, primitive fire-building and on-site cooking demonstrations which gave patrons an opportunity to sample some authentic Native American cuisine. In addition, the event featured several films on Native American culture that were shown hourly.
Following the festivities, several participants took the opportunity to explore some of the museum’s exhibitions, which focus on Native American culture and archaeology, as well as the geology of New York State and Long Island.
