Despite the winter chill and snow flurries, Garden City residents assembled at the village green to enjoy holiday festivities and a yearly tradition many look forward to. The Garden City Chamber of Commerce hosted the 59th annual tree lighting ceremony Sunday. The afternoon began at 3:30 p.m. with an enthusiastic performance by FiveStone, a contemporary rock band that’s played prior Garden City events like the Belmont Festival but this performance was its debut at the Garden City Christmas tree lighting.
“I used to bring my kids here when they were little,” says Althea Robinson, executive director of Garden City Chamber of Commerce, “I’ve been attending the event for over 30 years.”
Complimentary hot chocolate was provided by the Garden City Fire Department, along with cookies and snacks locally provided by Dunkin’ Donuts, Honestly Delicious, Bagelman, the Garden City Hotel, Kings, My Three Sons Bagel Cafe, and Key Food marketplace.
Entertainment was accommodated by The Garden City High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Stephen Mayo, who sang a series of Christmas classics. Also for the first time, Garden City’s Recreation Dancers performed a number before the big moment arrived.
As always, Kingsley Bear, King’s mascot, was available for photos with the children.
Mayor John Watras greeted the crowd before Santa arrived. “I thank you all for being here today—our sponsors and board of trustees.”
Santa finally arrived, with a procession of Garden City firetrucks to aid Mayor Watras in lighting the tree, along with two trees on Franklin and Stewart avenues.
“I’ve been going to this event since I was born,” said Garden City resident Sarah Desantis. “It’s a great part of this town and brings our community together.”
