Gatsby’s Gallery: F. Scott Fitzgerald & The Art World of His Time

Presenter:  Charles Riley, II, Ph.D. As Fitzgerald completed his masterpiece in France during the Jazz Age, his social circle included Picasso, Leger, Gertrude Stein, Man Ray and many of the stars of Modern Art. The new Gatsby movie raises the question, where is the art in Gatsby? Syosset Public Library, 2 p.m.

Blood Drive

The Rainforest Butterflies

The Atria in Plainview, 12 Washington Ave., presents guest lecturer Steve Fratello as he lectures on the beauty and variety of rainforest butterflies. Fratello, an explorer and naturalist, will dazzle attendees with his spectacular collection of rainforest butterflies and moths, many of which were collected by Fratello during numerous expeditions. The difference between butterflies and moths, rainforest climate and geography and other biological topics will be discussed. This program will awe, delight and educate you. Children welcome. Vocalist Sean Mahoney Entertains

Visitors to the Atria in Plainview, 12 Washington Ave., will delight in the vocal stylings of Sean Mahoney, who will perform Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. He is a professional singer with 35 years of performances including live shows/groups, opera, musical theater, and back up singer for Paul Anka, Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka, and Lou Rawls. Flap-Jack Breakfast for Alex

On Dec. 28, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the American Legion Post 449 in Farmingdale will sponsor a flap-jack breakfast at the Airport Plaza Applebee’s. The event is being held to benefit the son of one of the Legion’s members, Alex, a former Farmingdale EMS, and recovering cancer survivor.  Tickets cost $13. Chopin & 19th Century Paris

The award-winning Karkowska Sister Duo comes to the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Rd., Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. for a musical tour of 19th century Paris, home to many of the most important composers in the world. This includes Chopin and many others, whose famous works and arrangements will be played on piano and violin. For more information, call 516-938-0077.

Aerosmith Tribute Band

Come hear PUMP play your favorite Aerosmith hits — from “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion” to “Dude Looks Like a Lady” and “Rag Doll” — by band members who walk, talk, act and perform just like Aerosmith. Babies And BimBam

A fun, interactive class is coming up at HANC of Plainview for children turning 2 by December 31. Cost is $50 for six classes, or pay-as-you-go for $10 per class. Classes will be meeting on Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. For more information, contact shecht@hanc.org, or call 681-5922.

Miscarriage Support Group

A safe, confidential, supportive environment in which to talk about what you have been through, your reactions and feelings, and how to move forward. You are not alone! Facilitated by a professional therapist. Meetings held on three consecutive Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. in the Hicksville-Plainview area. $60 for three meetings. Free Veterinary Lectures

Once a month through December, Long Island Cat Fanciers sponsors free lectures given by top local veterinarians on topics relevant to dog and cat owners. All members of the public are welcome to. The ectures are generally held on the first Monday of each month at the Town of Oyster Bay Syosset-Woodbury Community Center, 7900 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, at 7:45 p.m. For more information, call 631-277-3844

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA)

A 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Meets at the following locations: Thursdays, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Ave, Westbury first and third Friday, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the School of the Community Reformed Church, 90 Plandome Rd, Manhasset. Monday evenings, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Road, Plainview. There are no dues or fees. For more information, call 866-800-3881.

Plainview Lions Club Meeting

Serving the Plainview-Old Bethpage and Bethpage communities since 1957, the Lions Club holds dinner meetings on the second Wednesday of every month through July. The Lions Club strives to make a difference in local communities and encourages residents to come in and voice thier concerns.
