For Dolores Sartor, the holiday season doesn’t mean more giving, it means continuing to give as she does the other 11 months of the year.
“As a Christian, I feel that it’s something I should be doing to help other people who are less fortunate than I am,” the Hicksville resident says.
Sartor is in charge of community service for the Carle Place Homemakers, and for the past 25 years has helped organize numerous food and clothing drives. She’s helped collect prom dresses for the Junior League of Long Island, and also recently helped collect business clothes for the Family and Children’s Association, which will be given to young people going on job interviews.
Sartor is also an avid knitter. She makes and donates about 35 baby sweaters every year, as well as numerous baby blankets, and afghans for veterans. Several years ago, she made 25 children’s hats for the Family and Children’s Association.
“At Christmastime, I got a card signed by every child, and a picture of them and they all had the hats on,” Sartor said. “I was so pleased, it just touched my heart.”
While the items Sartor makes or collects are a tremendous help to all who receive it, Sartor says she feels wonderful while helping others.
“This is my retirement job,” says Sartor. “It makes me feel very good, I like to keep busy and this is helping somebody else.”
