Long Island Weather: Blizzard Warning for Nassau and Suffolk

Long Island Blizzard

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for Nassau and Suffolk counties, effective from 6 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. EST Friday.

Snow accumulations are expected to range from 1 inch Wednesday night through Thursday morning rush hour, with between 7 to 10 inches expected 6 p.m. Thursday through 1 p.m. Friday.

Weather hazards include heavy snow and strong wind gusts of up to 46 miles per hour, with wind chills from 10 below zero to zero, the worst conditions expected Thursday evening into Friday morning.

“Blowing and drifting snow will produce dangerous travel conditions,” warns its update. “A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely dangerous.

“Do not travel,” it continues. “If you must travel have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded stay with your vehicle.”
