Girls cross country racks up wins and accolades

The girls cross country team wrapped up another excellent season with a number of team and individual accolades. Sophomore Stephanie Gerland was still running as of this writing, having qualified for the Nike Nationals in Portland, OR, last month.

The Garden City girls produced one of the best cross country seasons for Coach Charlie Cuzzo with a County Championship, a very close second place finish at the State Qualifier meet, an event where Garden City took the two top individual spots, as well as a Nike National qualifier.

Finishing one and two in the State qualifier and Class County meets at Bethpage State Park, sisters Stephanie and Jennifer Gerland showed that they were not only at the top of Nassau County but also Long Island.

Each of the girls on the team continued to produce top level results meet after meet all season long to help the Lady Trojans to an undefeated conference season once again.

As a team, this squad had numerous great races during the season with seven girls helping the squad deliver the championship. The Garden City girls received many well deserved post season accolades. The Gerland sisters were named All County, All Class, All Conference and All Division—what a tremendous season for two dedicated and committed runners. And Stephanie isn’t done yet.

Also winning All Class with the Gerlands, which meant that you were one of the top 14 finishers at the Class County meet, were Laurel Fisher and Caroline Ferri.

Sarah Rubino joined Stephanie and Jennifer Gerland, Caroline Ferri and Laurel Fisher in being named All Conference for their outstanding season.

The cross country season ended with some very talented ladies receiving their many awards, however they really don’t get much of a break as they all shift over to the indoor track season.
