Olympia “Lee” (nee Scobbo) Nunziata died at the age of 91 on Nov. 30.
A lifelong resident of Port Washington and parishioner of Saint Peter of Alcantara RC Church she will be remembered not only as a devoted wife and mother, but as a source of wisdom and life lessons for her family and friends.
She and her husband, John, who died in 2004, resided on Haven Avenue for almost 70 years.
Lee’s maternal grandparents, Vincent and Alessandra Bisaccia, settled in Port Washington in 1897 to pursue the American dream. Like her mother, Jenny, Lee was born in the family home on Port Washington Boulevard. Her father, Frank Scobbo, a proud, hardworking man, instilled strong values in his daughter and her siblings, Nick, Jimmy, Frank Scobbo and Marie Hahn.
A faithful parishioner of St. Peter’s Church, Lee always appreciated the St. Peter’s community and staff. She attended Saint Peter of Alcantara School, Flower Hill School and Port Washington High School. Among her teachers were Paul D. Schrieber and Carrie Palmer Weber for whom the schools are now named.
Port Floor Covering was the family business. Lee and John owned the business on Haven Avenue then Main Street for 40 years.
Lee is survived by her children Sandra, John (Chris), Thomas (Gail), Peter (Sara) and Paul (Karen) and 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, her sister, Marie Hahn, brother, Frank (Phyllis) Scobbo and many loving nieces and nephews.
Lee has been described by her family as a woman of sterling character and strong faith who lived a noble life. They summed up her life in the words of Saint Francis who said, “Preach the gospel always, and when necessary use words.” She will be sadly missed by her family, neighbors and friends. Though her voice is still, her spirit echoes on.
