Track Trouble Sparks LIRR Delays, Cancelations

Long Island Rail Road riders are facing delayed and canceled trains during the Wednesday evening rush-hour commute due to a third-rail problem in one of the East River tunnels, MTA officials said.

Westbound LIRR service had been suspended between Jamaica and Penn stations since a “smoke condition” was first reported in one of the tunnels at around 2 p.m. Service was also suspended from Woodside to Penn stations on the Port Washington line. Westbound service was restored shortly after 6 p.m.

The railroad said that New York City Transit is to cross-honoring LIRR fares for the E subway at Jamaica, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills. The same goes for the 7 subway at Woodside and the 2/3 subways at Atlantic Terminal.
