Female Fueled STEM Sweep

Garden City tops Lawrence in science bowl

On Jan. 25, Garden City High School students competed in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Regional Science Bowl in Upton, N.Y. Garden City fielded the only all-girls team at the competition, an accomplishment that was made all the more timely as the theme for this year’s event was “The International Year of Crystallography,” honoring Rosalind Franklin’s contributions to the discovery of the DNA double helix. Students first heard from Dr. Ken White, manager of educational programs at Brookhaven National Laboratory, who announced the opening of a new supercollider on the laboratory campus, and invited students to apply for summer internships at the labs.

The events consisted of fast-paced rounds of 25 questions each, during which the Garden City team, composed of juniors Kerri Heuser, Leslie Wann, Emma Gong, and Nicole Crilly, and senior Emily Mozdzer, scored a victory against a tough Lawrence High School team. The team was coached by Dr. John Slater, advanced placement physics teacher, and by Dr. Steven Gordon, science research coordinator, both of whom were in attendance in support of the students. This event helps students to see the real world applications of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) courses and introduces them to STEM careers that they might want to pursue in the future.

Dr. Steven Gordon is a Garden City High School science research teacher.
