Siela Bynoe is the newest member of the Nassau County legislature, after winning last week’s special election for the District 2 seat.
“I want to be a strong voice in the legislature for the district,” Bynoe, who was the Democratic nominee, said. “I’m excited that I have an opportunity to serve the community in a different capacity, and I’m looking forward to working on some initiatives that will bring a better quality of life to the community.”
Bynoe has a strong history in public service. The Westbury resident is the Executive Director of the Huntington Housing Authority and previously worked at the Long Island Housing Partnership.
She said she will be stepping down from her position as a Westbury School Board trustee, but has not made a decision yet as to when she will resign. She will also be stepping down from her position as a commissioner for the North Hempstead Housing Authority.
District 2 includes parts of Hicksville, Westbury, New Cassel, Hempstead, East Meadow, Garden City, Malverne, Rockville Centre, Uniondale and West Hempstead. Bynoe says one of her top priorities is to increase economic development and housing in the district.
Voter turnout was low for the election which was held Feb. 11. Of the 1,451 votes cast, Bynoe received 80 percent with 1,154 votes while Republican contender Pepitz Blanchard claimed the other 244.
Bynoe is slated to begin her term by the next Nassau County legislature meeting on Feb. 24.
