Syosset Runner Honored

jablonSyosset’s Bert Jablon, 86, was presented with the Long Island Association of USA Track & Field’s John McManus Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement on Feb. 16 at Hofstra University.

“In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in athletics during a lifetime of competition on the roads,” the award reads. “He has been an inspiration to athletes of all ages with his outstanding performances and true concern for the sport and all its participants.”

The Award was presented to Jablon by USA Track & Field Long Island President Alex Cuozzo and by Bill Benson, who was the first recipient of the Award five years ago.

Jablon has consistently placed in local races, including the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor’s 5K, coming in first place in the 85-and-over age group. Jablon recently braved the snowy roads to come in first in the 85-and-over age group in the Jonas Chiropractic 5K at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. With much of the farm area of the Village covered in snow, the Long Island Running Club had no choice but to reroute the course onto the streets.
