Levittown’s MacArthur High School administration and staff are pleased to announce that Belinda Grunfeld and Mira Sobhy are valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the Class of 2014.
Grunfeld is an Advanced Placement student with Distinction and a member of the Principal’s Honor Roll for all four years of high school. She is a NASA Texas Aerospace Scholar, the recipient of the Teacher’s Choice Award and a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music, Foreign Language and Mu Alpha Theta (Math) honor societies. Grunfeld has also played at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as a member of the Gemini Youth Orchestra. Her extracurriculars include being a Peer Leader, a member of the Key Club, mathletes, Amnesty International and the international Art club, as well as the art and recycling clubs. Last year, Grunfeld was one of five MacArthur High School students chosen to compete in the Nassau County Math Competition and had a poem published in
“A Celebration of Poets.” She also served as a volunteer for Tom Souzzi’s democratic campaign for Nassau County Executive. She has not chosen a college at this time, but plans on studying economics this fall.
Sobhy is an Advanced Placement student and one of 90 girls nationwide to intern for NASA WISH at the L.B.J. Space Center in Houston. She was a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership semifinalist and an honorable mention winner in the Long Island Science and
Engineering Fair. Sobhy was also the recipient ofstate Sen. Kemp Hannon’s Rising Star Award. She is a member of the robotics, science bowl and Environthon teams and is a member of the Christian and art clubs.
She is also a Science Olympiad, Science Congress, and Math Oympiad winner. As an athlete, Sobhy has competed four years on the USA swim team. A conscientious volunteer, her efforts include blood drives, car washes, nursing homes, hospitals, youth galas, and church groups. She has not chosen a college at this time, but plans on studying neuroscience this fall.
