Members of the Farmingdale Fire Department mourned the loss of Joseph Schweitzer, on Feb. 28, 2014. Schweitzer joined the Water, Witch Engine & Hose Company No. 1 on March 25, 1961, where he would later move up the ranks to become Rescue Squad Captain in 1966. Eventually, Schweitzer would work his way up to Captain of his Company in 1974, and would be named Chief of the Fire Department in 1975. He was on the Board of Commissioners from 1994-2009, and was the Chairperson of the Fire Department’s Fund Drive committee. He became a Life Member in 1986 and a 50-year member in 2011. Schweitzer was also a Fire Investigator with the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s office, Chairman of the Village Zoning Board, and cherished husband of Rosemary, his wife for 49 years. Beloved father of James and Peter. Loving brother of Ellen Maggand and a fond grandfather of Alex.
A Firematic Service was held at the Farmingdale Firehouse, with the cremation services held privately. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made the Farmingdale Fire Department, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, or Nassau University Medical Center Burn Unit.
