A man has been arrested for trying to stab a 40-year-old woman to death in the suspect’s hometown of Freeport on St. Patrick’s Day, Nassau County police said.

Eric W. Smith was charged with second-degree attempted murder, assault, unlawful imprisonment and possession of a dangerous a weapon.

Police said the 44-year-old suspect stabbed the victim at a house on Archer Street at 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The victim, who responding officers found standing in front of the house while bleeding from her face and arms, was taken to a local hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition.

Smith will be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
