A motor vehicle accident at the tail end of the rush hour on Tuesday morning left one driver dead, with a second driver and a passenger both injured.
At around 9 a.m., a dark-colored pick-up truck traveling south on Roslyn Road in Roslyn crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver of a Coach USA charter bus heading north then swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the truck, instead crashing into a pole.
The pick-up truck burst into flames and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the bus and the sole passenger were both seriously injured, trapped inside the bus.
Emergency medical personnel worked to free them from the vehicle and they were taken to a local hospital. Debris flew everywhere damaging nearby vehicles, including breaking the window of a passing SUV.
According to a motorist who was traveling on Roslyn Road right before the accident occurred but did not want to be identified due to the seriousness of the accident and the ongoing investigation, the pick-up truck had been driving erratically, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic for two miles along Roslyn Road prior to the accident. Two other witnesses traveling behind the truck said they also noticed the bizarre behavior of the driver and kept their distance.
Traveling south between Argyle Road and Heathcote Drive, Roslyn Road merges from two lanes to one. That’s where the driver of the pick-up truck swerved into oncoming traffic. Roslyn Road was closed for several hours during the rescue and investigation operations.
