The Westbury Memorial Public Library recently held its first Book Club for students in first through third grades.
During the Book Club, boys and girls gathered in the Children’s Library to read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry, and took part in a friendly and thought-provoking discussion led by Librarian Stephanie Avalos.
Additionally, participants completed an animal crossword puzzle and colored a tree similar to the one depicted in the book, all the while feasting on yummy snacks.
According to Avalos, programs of this nature play an important role in helping children further develop their reading comprehension skills.
“Reading comprehension is an important aspect of every curriculum. Throughout their education they will have to know the concepts of who, what, where, why and how,” Avalos said. “A program like this allows young children to be in a relaxed environment that reinforces what they are being taught in school.”
The Westbury Children’s Library plans to hold another Kids Book Club in early summer. Additionally, a Tween Book Club for students in fourth through sixth grade is also available.
