Free Comic Book Day Is Coming

The largest event in the comic industry, Free Comic Book Day, is taking place on Saturday, May 3, at participating comic book specialty shops across the country and worldwide, including right at Floral Park’s own Superhero Comics.

“People can stop by any time,” said Superhero Comics owner Rich Brindisi. “I hope new customers stop by too and become life-long fans of comic books.”

Superhero Comics will be celebrating 23 years of business in August.

The goal of Free Comic Book Day is to promote the comic book medium to new customers young and old and celebrate independent comic book retailers and their stores. Comics are exciting; currently the entertainment industry and pop culture are taking stories based on comics and making them hits, as seen with The Walking Dead, Superman, Thor, Avengers, and more. Comics are also known as a great tool for introducing young children to the world of reading.

“Free Comic Book Day gives new and devoted comic book, entertainment, and pop-culture fans the opportunity to get great titles for free, while participating in fun and interactive comic shop events,” said Free Comic Book Day spokesperson Dan Manser. “One of the best parts about Free Comic Book Day is discovering that you are a part of a giant community of like-minded fans who love the same stories, TV shows, and movies that you do. The comic shop is really a great place to meet your new best friends and discover the stories that will entertain you and enrich your life.”

This year’s list of 12 free comics featuring mainstream characters such as Archie, Simpsons, Batman, Hellboy, Hello Kitty, Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers, Disney’s Uncle Scrooge, Spongebob, and more.

Each year, participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Since its inception, Free Comic Book Day has given out more than 27 million free comics to nearly eight million people. This year alone over 4.6 million comics will be given away for free.
