Manhasset, NY 11030). The film will be followed by an interfaith panel with the film director, Artemis Joukowsky III and religious leaders: Charlie Clements, Executive Director of Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy; Rev. Dr. Paul S. Johnson, Senior Minister, UUCSR; Rabbi Lee Friedlander, The Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore and Daisy Kahn, Executive Director, The American Society for Muslim Advancement.
“Two Who Dared: The Sharps’ War” tells the story of a Unitarian minister, Waitstill Sharp and his wife Martha who, just days prior to the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, left their young children in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to help save thousands being persecuted in Eastern Europe. The film showcases the Sharps, who boldly committed to a hands-on approach to social justice, despite the strains it would have on their personal lives. In 2006, the Sharps were recognized by the State of Israel as “Righteous Among the Nations” at Yad Vashem for risking their lives to save Jews and dissidents during the Holocaust. Of the 25,000 so honored, there are only three Americans to ever be honored, Varian Fry and the Sharps.
The public is invited to take part in witnessing this remarkable story that reveals a timeless lesson of human sacrifice and courage.
